Oak Hill Primary

Tuesday July 8th 2025

Dear Diary,

I was excited to return to Oak Hill Primary today, after first visiting last June. There are only around 50 pupils at this small village school, but it was a joy to spend time with each and every one of them once again. And it was lovely to hear from the teachers how much the students had enjoyed WARNING: Magic Can Be Dangerous! and how keen they were to get their hands on WARNING: May Contain Dragons.

My assembly was a cosy affair, with everyone joining in with questions and answers throughout. Then it was on to classroom visits, starting with a session for Reception, Year 1, and Year 2.

The Reception pupils were full of energy, really neat at completing their letter tracing sheets, and so speedy! They and the Year 1 pupils then dreamt up book covers for stories about slime, unicorns, werewolves, and all number of other themes. And the two Year 2 pupils and one of the Year 1 pupils came up with some super stories!

Next it was time for me to visit the Year 3 & 4 class. These pupils were hard workers… and didn’t even flinch at the wasp flying around the room for ages… so it was great to have an extra-long session with them and watch their creativity flow. And there were so many talented writers and artists in this group!

After lunch, my final session was for Year 5/6. They were certainly a lively bunch. But they had incredible imaginations and were quick workers. Many of them flew through sheet after sheet as they came up with stories, raps, diary entries, recipes etc. And they really enjoyed the comic strip activity that followed the writing task. They weren’t as keen to read aloud as the younger pupils. But the beauty of doing classroom visits at smaller schools is that I get to work my way around each and every pupil. So, I was able to see what everyone during this session came up with!

There’s such a friendly atmosphere at Oak Hill Primary. The pupils there are so happy, hardworking, and helpful. And at the end of the day, two of the school ambassadors very kindly assisted me with my stall.
